The Rev. Terri Degenhardt

The Rev. Terri Degenhardt was called as the 8th rector of St. Augustine’s in July of 2023. Terri taught English for 28 years, first in high school and later with Augusta Technical College and as adjunct for various universities. She loved teaching and was known for telling her students, “I won’t tell you what to think, but how to think.”


She began her path to ministry when she attended Saint Paul’s Episcopal Church, Augusta. While there, she met Walter Degenhardt. They married in 2004, and she moved to Waynesboro, Georgia, where she became involved in ministry at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church.

She served St. Michael’s in Waynesboro focusing on those who have food insecurity.. After serving as a deacon for 9 years, she again answered God’s call but this time to become a priest. Terri attended the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee, and was ordained in 2017. Her first call was as Priest in Charge at St. Mary Magdalene in Louisville, Georgia, where she worked for three years. 


Terri serves as the Diocese of Georgia’s Episcopal Church Women’s Chaplain, on Diocesan Council, and on the Commission on Ministry. Her hobbies include reading, traveling, and writing Icons. She and Walter have two adult children, Walker Watson (Augusta) and Amanda Degenhardt (Hilton Head, SC), and two grandsons, (Hampton Woosley (California) and Thomas (Hilton Head).

After graduating from seminary at Regent University, Thomas planted Poema Community Church in Virginia Beach, Virginia. During his time at Poema, he worked as an adjunct professor at Regent University, teaching courses in New and Old Testament, Christian Ethics, Worldview, Youth Ministry, and Spirituality.


In 2013, having spent six years as senior pastor of Poema Community Church, he joined the Episcopal Diocese of Georgia. With a generous grant from Bishop Benhase, Thomas started a Community Youth Ministry in McIntosh County serving poor and at-risk children and youth surrounding St. Andrew’s and St Cyprian’s Episcopal Churches. He was ordained a priest in November of 2017, and moved to Augusta Georgia to plant a new Episcopal/ Lutheran church in the thriving community of Grovetown Georgia.


Thomas began working as Assisting Priest at St. Augustine's in 2023. His ministry passion is to develop & disciple community that expresses their need for Jesus Christ.

A “cradle Episcopalian” he was baptized, confirmed and served as an acolyte at St. Phillip’s Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey before joining the Army. He retired from the Army after 26 years active Federal Service. His last assignment at Fort Gordon was as Sergeant Major of the Telecommunications Center Operator Courses. In 1982, he went to work with Civil Service as an Engineering Technician and Engineer Mobilization Planner at the Facilities Engineer on Fort Gordon. From 1984 to 2005 he was a Training Specialist in the Signal Regimental Officer’s Academy, now the 442nd Signal Bn. He is also an Adjunct Professor for Religious Studies at the Augusta-Fort Gordon Branch of Georgia Military College.


He was ordained Deacon in 1986 by Bishop Harry Shipps, his former Rector at St. Alban’s and entered the ministry as a Vocational Deacon in 1986. His assignments were at St. Alban’s and then in 1994 to the Church of the Atonement.


He has been involved in the KAIROS Prison ministry since 1986. Bishop Loutitt assigned him to St. Augustine’s to assist

Deacon John Warner has been an Episcopalian his entire life also known as a “cradle Episcopalian.” A member of St. Augustine’s since the mid-1980’s, he served in many roles including youth and adult educator, usher, lay Eucharistic minister, vestry member, and Senior Warden. John was ordained into the diaconate in the Diocese of Georgia on July 9, 2002.


Although he retired from the State of Georgia in 2009 after

Although he retired from the State of Georgia in 2009 after 34 years of service in mental health administration working with the mentally ill, developmentally disabled and those with addictive diseases, he continued a ministry in this area by serving as a board member for the Friendship Community Center, a day services program for the severely mentally ill. Other community ministries include the Augusta chapter of Mental Health America; and the Augusta Coalition for Mental and Spiritual Health Ministries. 


After retirement from the State of Georgia, he started teaching as an adjunct assistant professor in psychology at the local campus of Georgia Military College. After thirteen years, he retired from this position. He is married to Marsha Lord Warner and has one daughter, Samantha who is married to Atul Sinha. He has three grandchildren, Shaun, Simran, and Jay Kumar Sinha.
